Sukiyaki Western: Django.
Jesse and I got around to watching this today while we chilled about on Memorial Day and I really dug the film. It’s a Japanese spaghetti western about the battle of two samurai cowboy gangs over a town and its treasure. It has a cameo by Quentin Tarantino and throw backs to so many other films and stories that your head will spin. Some of those throw backs include Yojimbo, Django, A Fistful of Dollars, and War of the Roses.
The movie is heavily stylized and is 99% in English, though the thick Japanese accents are tough to hear through at times. The wardrobe is stunning - a mixture of kimonos and cow hides. The action was intense and there were good bits of humor throughout. It hearkened back to the joy I got from watching old samurai films (a habit enforced by Seth).
Overall, I say this is a must see. It drags a little bit towards the end but it makes up for itself with the final fight.
